Canada’s stories are in good hands—those of our students! Now put a camera and a chance to explore Canada’s past into those hands and they will come up with moving, funny, clever, thought-provoking videos that enlighten others as well as themselves. Last spring , nine Heritage Fair projects from SSRSB were selected to be made into videos and submitted to Young Citizens, a nation wide competition! Riddh Hazra (Fall of New France) along with Madison Norwood (Residential Schools), Sophie Weir (Castle Loma), Ryan Vanderwal (The Liverpool Packet) Reid Pelly (The Royal Newfoundland Regiment at the Somme) and Natalie Toole (Canadian Nursing Sisters) entered videos from Bridgewater Elementary. Grace Ashevak (Inuit Sled Dogs) and Myranda Roy (Mi’kmaq Dancing) represented Hebbville Academy and Taylor Fogg (Fogg Family Tree) represented Bayview.
Two weeks ago Riddh Hazra and Taylor Fogg were honoured at the national youth forum in Ottawa for their video production. Honourable mentions were received by Reid Pelly and Natalie Toole . Riddh and Taylor were the two Nova Scotia finalists and were flown to Ottawa for a four day adventure. They joined twenty-four other students from across our country. They toured Parliament Hill in Ottawa, meeting with their MP Bernadette Jordan, and visited the Canadian War Museum learning about the commitment and sacrifice of Canadians at war. They attended an award ceremony during a tour of the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec and explored the Bytown Museum and Byward market. The students toured the Governor Generals residence at Rideau Hall, and even trick-or-treated on Sussex Drive! A great reward for all the hard work that went into the production of the videos!
“It’s just such a joy to see these young people engaging with Canadian history and connecting it to their own families and communities,” said Janet Walker, president and CEO of Canada’s History Society. “Even though some of the videos deal with very serious material, the quality of the work and the students’ passion really put a smile on your face.”
